On August 24, 79 AD, the city of Pompeii in Southern Italy was destroyed as a result of a massive volcanic eruption from nearby Mount Vesuvius. An estimated 16,000 people were killed as a result of the eruption, whether from poisonous gases, the lava, or the ash that blanketed the city. For nearly seventeen hundred years, the city lay undisturbed under the ash of the volcano, frozen in time, preserved just as the city was when the volcano violently erupted.
