The town once had its own Mint as well as a Dominican Priory and was granted a Royal Charter by King Edward I called the Statute of Rhuddlan, also known as the Statute of Wales. Birth place of Philip Jones Griffiths (the Vietnam War photographer) and Princess Elizabeth Plantagenet (Elizabeth of Rhuddlan).
