This book contains 12 short stories by American author Edgar Allen Poe. While many of Poe's stories—such as "The Gold-Bug" in this volume—contain some element of mystery and deduction, Poe is credited with creating the first detective character in fiction, even before the word "detective" was coined. His fictional French detective C. Auguste Dupin first appeared in "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," and then again in "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Purloined Letter." All three Dupin stories are included in this volume.
