A Look Inside

“the circumstance of the veil, throwing a mystery over the subject, that excited a faint degree of terror. But a terror of this nature, as it occupies and expands the mind, and elevates it to high expectation, is purely sublime, and leads us, by a kind of fascination, to seek even the object, from which we appear to shrink.”
― Eliza Parsons, The Castle of Wolfenbach

About the Book
First published in 1793, The Castle of Wolfenbach is a novel written by Eliza Parsons, an English writer of the eighteenth century. An early work of gothic literature, it follows the protagonist, Matilda Weimar, as she faces adversity and adventures. Matilda, a young and virtue-filled woman, flees her violent husband and finds sanctuary in the secluded Castle of Wolfenbach at the beginning of the story. She discovers hidden rooms and the terrible story of a persecuted noblewoman within the castle, among other dark secrets. As the plot develops, Matilda finds herself more and more entwined with the enigmas and secrets of the castle and its inhabitants. She faces danger, lies, and betrayal as she strives to preserve her integrity and learn the castle's history.
