Four years after the events of The Metal Wood, Phoenix has traded blood and magic for a quieter life in the Under, raising her three-year-old son beneath the floating city of New San Francisco. Guided by a grizzled old man haunted by missing memories, Phoenix and her son journey into the Below—a drowned city buried beneath the world, lit by a poisoned underground lake and ruled by those who worship the water itself.
