Frederick Courteney Selous (1851 - 1917) was a British explorer, officer, hunter, and conservationist, famous for his exploits in South-East Africa. Selous was also a friend of Theodore Roosevelt, Cecil Rhodes and Frederick Russell Burnham.

The book narrates the story of eleven years of travels in the interior of South Africa. Selous narrates his experience in collecting specimens of the magnificent fauna which once abounded throughout the land, his hunting adventures and his life among the South African Boers.
