A man's quest to find answers for those who are haunted by the past leads him deeper into the shadows in this electrifying New York Times bestseller from the author of Promise Not to Tell.
Quinton Zane is back.
Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. His almost preternatural ability to get inside the killer's head has garnered him a reputation in some circles--and complicated his personal life. The more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace.
But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long. Having solidified his position as the power behind the throne of his biological family's hedge fund, Zane sets out to get rid of Anson Salinas's foster sons, starting with Jack.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Krentz's formulaic and lackluster third Cutler, Sutter, and Salinas romantic thriller (after Promise Not to Tell) follows hypnotist Winter Meadows as she gets sucked into cold-case investigator Jack Lancaster's quest to find Quinton Zane, the pyromaniac con artist who murdered Jack's mother. Jack has the unique ability to use extended lucid dreams to sort through clues on his investigations. When he turns to Winter for help controlling this ability, the pair of former foster kids develop an unexpected bond, a connection that escalates when Jack saves Winter from a former client who has stalked her to remote Eclipse Bay, Ore. Jack's conviction that the stalker was manipulated by Zane proves correct, as Zane, deep in his latest and most personal con, attempts to eliminate all possible threats against him. Jack and Winter's ensuing investigation is a game of cat and mouse between a criminal who always assumes he is the smartest in the room, and a budding couple with new-age tricks up their sleeves. Though there is little to set this romantic thriller apart, Krentz's fans will enjoy the familiar elements and callbacks to previous installments.
