Variacion de Estilo en Relacion a la Variable Fonologica /S/ en El Espanol de Santiago de Chile‪.‬

ABSTRACT. This paper analyzes the effects of COMMUNICATIVE SITUATIONS on the phenomena of retention, aspiration, and deletion of the phonological variable /s/ in the Spanish spoken in Santiago de Chile. Communicative situation as a stylistic variable has not yet been explored in the study of /s/; therefore, the main objective of this research is to examine the variations that exist in the oral speeches of santiaguinos, from the standpoint of three communicative situations: conversation with friends, sociolinguistic interview, and oral presentation before an audience. The data were obtained from the spontaneous speech of four speakers, distributed according to sex and age. The results of the statistical data analysis demonstrate that speakers vary their style toward more standard forms within the more formal situations, and they evidence at the same time the importance of the communicative situation in the analysis of the /s/, since its distribution depends not only on linguistic and social factors, but also on stylistic ones. * INTRODUCCION. El segmento /s/ en posicion de coda silabica manifiesta a lo menos tres variantes claramente distinguibles: sibilada [s], aspirada [h] y elidida [[??]], cuyas distribuciones estadisticas dependen no tan solo de factores linguisticos y sociales, sino que tambien de factores estilisticos, tales como la situacion en donde se desenvuelve el acto comunicativo, la relacion de familiaridad entre los interlocutores, el tipo de genero discursivo y el topico, entre otros. La presente investigacion es un estudio de caso que se enfoca particularmente en el analisis del efecto de LA SITUACION COMUNICATIVA sobre los fenomenos de retencion de la sibilante, aspiracion y elision de /s/ en el espanol de Santiago de Chile. (1) Las situaciones analizadas son: conversacion con amigos, entrevista sociolinguistica, y presentacion oral frente a un publico. Con el fin de dar evidencias cuantitativas sobre la importancia del factor estilistico en la distribucion de /s/, la situacion comunicativa ha sido correlacionada con factores sociales como la edad y el sexo y algunos factores linguisticos tales como la posicion de /s/ en la palabra (interna y final), el acento y el numero de silabas. Los resultados muestran que el efecto de la situacion comunicativa en la realizacion de las variantes de /s/ tiene un peso probabilistico mucho mas alto que los factores sociales (edad y sexo) y algunos de los factores linguisticos bajo analisis.
