Eric Idle’s breezy “sortabiography” is less concerned with his Monty Python years than his life before and after. After all, as Idle points out, there’s more documentation of the groundbreaking comedy troupe than there are actual episodes of the BBC series that made them famous. Even when discussing his difficult childhood and issues like co-Python Graham Chapman’s incapacitating alcoholism, Idle is a cheery storyteller. His delight at encountering fellow geniuses like Robin Williams and George Harrison—who gave his blessing for that timeless Beatles parody, The Rutles—is palpable. We found his sunny memoir utterly charming.
