While Eli Vaughn lies in a coma-like sleep in his bedroom at Daylesford, across the portal in Ephemera, Nox Sylvain wakes up alone in his family's cottage. After his parents' outcasting, he must now follow on his father's steps and become a Silvares in Ephemera Sylua, with no one for company but the flock of griffendrakes that follow him everywhere. His solitude lessens when he meets the Dellaqua sisters, blind Hya and beautiful Stella, who, like Nox, can charm birds to do her bidding - and though Nox is no winged creature, he, too, falls under her spell.

It's his friendship with the Lord of Thorne Ridge, though, that threatens to upend Nox's life, for with conflicting forces rising all around him, he must choose sides and make a stand.
