Basic words are very important but saying bicyclette instead of vélo simply doesn’t sound natural. If  your  language  is  too  formal,  you  will  appear pretentious and you will not always be understood. On the contrary, if your language is too informal, you will give the impression of lacking education or you will disrespect your interlocutor!
