Eiffel Tower

Descripción editorial

It struck me as we climbed the Eiffel in its centenary year of 1989, that my grandfather was a teenager in Scotland when Gustave Eiffel complete his tower. My father and mother climbed it; my wife and  three children climbed it; and, soon, my grandchildren will stand on that platform overlooking the world’s premier city.

At over 1,000 feet, it was the highest that any person in the history of the world had ever stood above ground on a man-made structure. It came within a whisker of being demolished when its lease ended; and of being bombed out of existence by Adolf Hitler. Countless movies have toppled it, but it will still be there long after your visit.

This touring booklet gives you all the usual facts PLUS historical details, lots of maps, over 100 photos including the original sketches, a biography of Gustave Eiffel and some personal insights from my own trips up the Eiffel.

I suggest starting your tour at Trocadéro on the north shore of the Seine opposite the Eiffel to get the best vistas and appreciation of its magnificence.

This is not your grandfather’s tour book. It’s a graphic-photo montage with lots of stories, maps and insights. A good preparation and guide for your tour and a companion for your re-visits long after you have returned home.
