Katharine Howard is poor, proud, learned, and devoutly attached to the Old Faith. Escorted to London by her hot-tempered cousin Thomas Culpeper and aided by her cunning former tutor Nicholas Udal, she comes to the court of Henry VIII and finds herself in a place that is less a seat of pageantry than a machine of fear — governed from the shadows by Thomas Cromwell, the Lord Privy Seal, through an unseen web of spies, informers, and quiet ruin.

Into that atmosphere of universal suspicion Katharine brings a transparent honesty, and it is precisely her difference from everyone around her that draws the eye of the ageing, weary King — captivated less by her beauty than by the rare spectacle of a person who will tell him the truth. Around that dangerous attraction the intrigue tightens: Cromwell calculating how to use her, the duplicitous Throckmorton shifting his loyalties, and Katharine herself struggling to hold to her faith and her honour as the court closes around her.

Published in 1906, The Fifth Queen is the first volume of Ford Madox Ford's acclaimed historical trilogy, and a landmark in the form. Ford takes the worn costume romance of the Tudor court and remakes it from within, applying the impressionist techniques he developed alongside Joseph Conrad — rendering the period not through dates and battles but through charged detail, shadow, overheard half-sentences, and the haze of rumour and dread through which its people see their world. Conrad called the result the swansong of historical romance.

Beneath the intrigue runs a novel about conscience under pressure: Katharine's idealism against the pervasive cunning of the court, the old faith against Cromwell's new order of spies and administrators, the single honest soul against the machinery of fear.
