After six years of foreign reporting, Munro gave up his journalist career and began writing short stories, mocking Edwardian society and culture, under the pen name Saki.

First published in 1914 as a part of a short story collection Beasts and Superbeasts, The Quince Tree is an extremely humorous story of a young girl Vera and her aunt, Mrs. Bebberly Cumble, embodying flaws and drawbacks of Edwardian society.
