Chapter 1: Fundamentals of the Urbanism: De las Ciudades Antiguas a los Modelos Modernos Urbanism, as a discipline that organizes collective human space, is not a recent invention. Its roots were found in the dawn of civilization, when nomadic groups began to settle, cultivate the land and build permanent communities. This chapter traces a historical line from the first known cities to the models that defined the XX century, preparing the ground for the transformative visions of Buckminster Fuller and Frank Lloyd Wright that we will explore in the following chapters. Understanding this evolution allows us to understand how urbanism has always responded to the tensions between concentration and dispersion, power and freedom, poverty and abundance — tensions that are now manifest in the era of artificial intelligence, robotics and multiplanetary expansion.
Los Orígenes: Las Primeras Ciudades y el Nacimiento del Urbanismo Planified Approximately 10,000 years ago, during the Neolithic Revolution, humanity transitioned from nomadism to sedentary living. The development of agricultural products or food surpluses, which often facilitates the specialization of work, trade and social justice. The first cities emerged around 4500-4000 BC in fertile regions such as Mesopotamia (now Iraq), the Indus Valley (Pakistan and India) and the Nile in Egypt.
In Mesopotamia, cities like Uruk and Ur exhibited deliberate planning: defensive murals, central temples (zigurats) for religious and political focos, irrigation systems and closed streets. Uruk, considered one of the first green cities, had possibly 50,000-80,000 inhabitants and showed a clear division between residential, administrative and religious zones.
