A Look Inside
“Be faithful, be vigilant, be untiring in your efforts to break every yoke, and let the oppressed go free. Come what may - cost what it may - inscribe on the banner which you unfurl to the breeze, as your religious and political motto - "NO COMPROMISE WITH SLAVERY! NO UNION WITH SLAVEHOLDERS”
― William Lloyd Garrison, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

About the Book
The first edition of Frederick Douglass' autobiography, Narrative of the Life of an American Slave, was released in 1845. Written by famed orator and former slave Frederick Douglass, it is divided into two sections: a thesis supporting the outlawing of slavery and an autobiographical narrative detailing his own experiences. One of the most well-known accounts of slavery, this book details the author's life and his contacts with white slave masters. Within the first three months after it was published, the book sold 5,000 copies; by 1860, that number had risen to thirty thousand. Douglass was afraid of being kidnapped by his master, so he had to flee the country when the book was released. He traveled to Britain and Ireland, where his freedom was obtained via donations made by his friends. A number of people voiced their displeasure with the book's reception, claiming Douglass had the skills and experience required to write it. He wrote the work primarily to express his opinions on contemporary slavery-related issues in a way that would be hard to refute, in contrast to his public remarks. Eleven chapters make up the book, with two openers written by well-known white abolitionists, William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips.
