According to the doctor who analyzed my sleep study, I was "self-medicating with beer and iced coffee." Its true. For a time, when I got home, I only wanted to toss back 2 Fosters Oil Cans and disappear in front of the TV. But that's not what my dogs had in mind.
They were ecstatic to see me. They needed to pee. They needed the fresh air and exercise. And so did I.
The mundane chore became an adventure. Once I managed to warg into the dogs, I started to see the pavement as a portal, trash as treasure, presence as precious. Mostly, I saw myself as they saw me, as love. We often merged as a single consciousness on those walks through the neighborhood. There is no perfect word to describe the feeling. Flow, surrender, peace...
After the day came that I had to let them go to a new home, I ended up at a meditation retreat in the desert where I realized I was struggling to let go of my old life. That is where I found a copy of the Tao te Ching.
Look here for a photographic record of those walks with excerpts from the Tao. As if to speak the unspeakable.
