Publisher Description

Review of Mana Tuturu: Maori Treasures and Intellectual Properly Rights by Barry Barclay (Auckland: Auckland University Press, 2005). Barry Barclay's most recent film is the 2005 documentary feature The Kaipara Affair, which centres on a dispute over fishing rights in the village of Tinopal on the northern side of the Kaipara Harbour. The film, which screened at the Wellington International Film Festival in 2005, and won awards at festivals abroad, was also shown on television in New Zealand in July 2006, in a highly edited form produced without Barclay's consent. His reaction was both personal, demanding that his name be removed from the credits, and concerned with the wider implications of the act, pointing out the need for the Board of NZ On Air to review the guidelines governing the ways in which it funds the various projects that receive its financial support. Outraged with what had happened to a production he had carefully worked on for a number of years, Barclay produced a twenty-page report on the whole situation, entitled A Pistol on the Table, which he subsequently sent to both NZ On Air and the Prime Minister's Office.
