CHAPTER 1

Vance spent his childhood in the small town of Jackson, Kentucky. It was a beautiful place that housed the kindest people with a deeply-embedded Appalachian culture. They respected the dead and helped others in need, but they were also the sort of people who shirked work and made excuses for everything.
Vance spent most of his time with his grandparents who shielded him from the worst of his family. His Mamaw primarily ensured that he never witnessed any of his mother's drama during her occasional visits. The family moved to Ohio to escape all the vice and poverty, but he still visited Jackson often to visit his old and ailing great-grandmother.
Jackson had quite a few issues, and as if the poverty wasn't enough, the town began to struggle even more when drug addiction took root. The education system was failing as well, but with poor parents lacking the luxury of choice, they were forced to send their kids to terrible schools despite the poor conditions. When Vance was a small child, he had a deep sense of appreciation towards the town and his family, but as he grew older, it was painfully evident that the people were suffering only because they weren't doing anything about it.
