He left New York for a desert home following a severe heart attack. Joe's sons, Salvatore "Bill" Bonanno and Joseph Bonanno Jr. were indicted for extortion. Following a mistrial they were retried in San Jose, California. Bill Bonanno strived to retain control of the Mafia empire his father had established over time.
