Publisher Description

An account of their expeditions, this volume discusses the accomplishments of John Cabot, the first European to reach Canada, and his son, Sebastian. John Cabot was an Italian explorer who, according to the Canadian and United Kingdom governments, landed on the island of Newfoundland during his explorations of North America. After two explorations throughout the rivers of Canada and around Newfoundland, Cabot set out on a final voyage with a fleet of five ships carrying goods in hopes to engage in trade with other settlements and Native North American tribes. However, Cabot's ships never reached their destinations. It is believed they were lost at sea. After John's death in 1499, his son Sebastian made a voyage in 1508 in hopes of finding the Northwest Passage, but instead ended up looking for silver along the Rio de la Plata from 1528 to 1558.
