Seaplanes

Of all the fun things one can do in flying, seaplane flying is high on most pilots’ favourite lists! From taking off from a sandy beach in the summer heat, avoiding all the traffic on the road and then landing up in the somewhat cooler mountainous regions for lunch, seaplane flying gives us amazing opportunities and freedoms.

Seaplane flying never gets boring. The water is never the same as the last time you landed there. Changes in wind direction, wind speed, wave heights, currents, lighting conditions, and boat traffic are some of the factors that are constantly changing and require vigilance from a seaplane pilot.

This book is written from a practical point of view, and most of it is taken from the recommendations of experienced seaplane pilots under specific conditions. 

The book was originally written in Norwegian in 1977 and 1983 by Reinert C. Barratt and Tor B. Kirkvaag. It has since been revised in 1995 by Tor B.  Kirkvaag and Arnfinn Halland and then revised in 2002, 2015, and 2022 by Erlend Vaage. Translated to English in 2024 by Erlend Vaage.
