Exodus means “Going out.” Deliverance and redemption are its great themes. Israel was a nation of slaves in cruel bondage under Pharaoh in Egypt. God’s judgment upon Egypt is a picture of His coming judgment of the world. The blood of the Passover lamb is typical of our redemption by the blood of Christ. The parting of the Red Sea and Israel’s safe crossing portrays our redemption from the bondage of sin and the world through the death and resurrection of Christ.

Moses as the deliver and leader of the people of God prefigures Christ. Exodus also presents the giving of the Law on Sinai and the construction of the tabernacle, a “pattern” of heavenly things to come. God dwelling among His people is marvelously typified in this second book of the Bible.

Exodus beautifully illustrates the grace by which God cares continually for His people, delighting to have them near Himself on the basis of the sacrifice of Christ.
