In a London bedroom shadowed by an Egyptian painting, the sick Mrs. Lattin waits for her husband Phillip, a British agent whose life has been bound to Egypt and to her own mysterious dread of it. The story later moves to Athens, where Phocion and Lydia face a similar clash between private love and patriotic sacrifice under Alexander's shadow.
