Publisher Description
Men are more likely to be substance abusers and to be in substance abuse treatment than women (SAMHSA 2000). They are also more apt to have difficulty asking for help (Addis & Mahalik 2003). What does a beginning mental health practitioner need to consider when working with men in groups (whether psycho-educational, support, or psychotherapeutic) as well as individually? The following 12 considerations may be helpful in guiding practice with men who seek assistance for substance abuse. (For the purposes of this article, substance abuse refers to men with significant alcohol and other drug problems that impair their daily living.) Suggestions for addressing these considerations are included. TWELVE CONSIDERATIONS
