On the remote Roman border, Marius Livonius commands a detachment of seasoned soldiers. Stationed near the Danube River and living near violent Germanic tribes, his life is often occupied with the potential of violence from formidable barbarians.

But something else is threatening his command and people. 

Citizens and soldiers are coming up missing, and what is moving south to attack them may prove far more dangerous than the normal weapons and tactics of lethal tribesmen.
