Will a new breed of engineered tomatoes developed by the Madam be superior to the standard variety being used by the major food processors. The research has been going on until the new plants are ready for a commercial test. But where to do you plant and harvest in almost secrecy thousands of acres of tomatoes.
What better place than Caldwell county in Missouri to hide anything. Briallen has the task of finding 9,000 acres to plant. The Madam has built special harvesting machines to pick all the fruit. The deal sounds too good to be true. The Madam supplies the plants, fertilizer, harvesting and purchasing of the crop. In addition, if the farmers make less on the tomatoes than their yearly income, the Madam will make up the difference in cash. The farmer must tend the crop as they normally would.
Everything looks promising until My-Ling dives deeper into the history of Caldwell County, Missouri. Some earlier settlers were given a new county created by the state of Missouri just for them. After they were chased out of Independence Missouri by mobs; it was Caldwell County. In a few years, the new settlers were driven out by mobs and then the State issued an Extermination order to clean out Caldwell County and the northern Davis County of all these settlers.
She found that this land was considered 'Holy and Sacred' by the settlers then and their descendants to this very day. My-Ling's people plan for 50 to 100 years into the future. These settlers and their descendants have been planning as far as 500 years into the future.
What affect will My-Ling foot note have on choosing Missouri as the place for the Madam to plant her new tomatoes?
