2027: The Year of the Author

Before there can be a reader, there must first be someone willing to write.

2027: The Year of the Author is a celebration of the people behind the words-the novelists, poets, historians, memoirists, children's writers, journalists, playwrights, screenwriters, educators, nonfiction writers, indie authors, traditionally published authors, and countless others who turn ideas, experiences, questions, and imagination into something the world can read.

Created in support of the Texas Authors Museum's Year of the Author initiative, this book asks us to look beyond sales numbers, bestseller lists, publishing labels, social-media followers, and awards and recognize something more fundamental: an author creates something that did not exist before.

But this is more than a celebration.

Authors will discover practical ways to make the most of the Year of the Author by becoming more visible, reconnecting with readers, rediscovering their backlists, working with libraries and bookstores, participating in community events, collaborating with other writers, protecting their careers, and recognizing accomplishments they may have been too busy to celebrate.

The book also confronts one of the defining questions facing writers today: What does human authorship mean in the age of artificial intelligence? It makes the case for the continuing value of human intention, lived experience, responsibility, judgment, memory, creativity, and voice while recognizing that technology can be a tool without becoming the author.

The celebration is designed to grow beyond a single year or organization. Even-numbered years celebrate readers. Odd-numbered years celebrate authors. Together, the Year of the Reader and Year of the Author recognize the relationship that makes literature possible.

Whether you published your first book yesterday, have spent decades writing, are traditionally published, independently published, work with a small press, or are still finding your place in the literary world, 2027 is your year.
