Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh, the author of this book, was a young man of seventeen, when John Wesley Powell chose him to participate in his second trip down the Colorado River. Powell was Frederick’s idol his whole life. This, second voyage was more about science. Part of the Powel’s team, aside from Frederick, was Almon Harris Thompson, a professional geographer who was actually Powel’s brother-in-law. They had several boats with them. The expedition sailed the Green river to its junction with the Colorado River and the Colorado River itself.
It was a journey filled with maggotty food, swirling rapids, extreme heat and sudden blizzards. And, most certainly it was a journey the young Frederick will remember until the end of his life.
This expedition was not only a journey for the purpose of science, but it was a journey that opened new views in the Frederick’s mind. He saw many things he wasn’t aware of.
Wishing to have that journey forever, the author put all his memories on a paper, which resulted in this book. Apart from description of the expedition, in this book you will find 50 illustrations.
