A merchant family home reveals postwar middle-class life, kinship, and ambition in small-town Sri Lanka

A Merchant’s House follows a Sinhala-Buddhist merchant family in small-town Sri Lanka over two decades, revealing how homes, relationships, and everyday routines shape lives, ambitions, and social standing. Luke A. Heslop traces the construction, habitation, and eventual decline of the family’s houses, showing how these spaces are both physical structures as well as sites of care, negotiation, conflict, and moral work.

Set against the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s civil war, postwar authoritarianism, and economic crises, the ethnography captures how ordinary families navigate opportunity, obligation, and uncertainty. Heslop shows how decisions about marriage, inheritance, and business are inseparable from the domestic spaces in which they are made. By focusing on a small town rather than urban centers or areas directly affected by conflict, the book highlights a part of Sri Lanka often overlooked: families for whom the war created openings, and whose fortunes are entangled with national politics, economic liberalization, and social expectations.

Through intimate portraits of domestic life, A Merchant’s House illuminates the tensions and hopes that drive families’ everyday work. The book explores how homes can sustain ambition and cohesion, absorb conflict, and mark the passage of generations, offering a window onto both the particularities of one family and the broader currents of middle-class life in contemporary Sri Lanka.
