This book serves as a comprehensive reference guide to the critical subject of Aeroplane Upset Prevention and Recovery Training, A-UPRT, as laid out in FCL.745.A.
Its primary aim is to equip pilots with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to recognize, prevent, and recover from undesirable aeroplane states, commonly known as aeroplane upsets.
Loss of Control In-Flight (LOC-I) accidents have emerged as the leading cause of fatalities in commercial aviation over the last two decades, surpassing Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) accidents. While LOC-I incidents account for approximately 8% of total accidents, they result in over half of all fatalities observed in commercial aviation, with 94% of these accidents proving fatal. This stark reality underscores the vital importance of upset prevention and recovery training.
Also, modern cockpit environments, with their reliance on automation, have unfortunately contributed to a decline in pilots' manual flying skills. This has affected many pilots ability to respond appropriately to unforeseen situations. In response, governing bodies like EASA and ICAO have introduced stricter regulations and training requirements, making advanced UPRT an important component of pilot training since December 2019, and a pre-requisite before you do your first type rating in a multi-pilot aeroplane.
