Callie often thought she’d like to have a skeleton in the family closet; an instant claim to fame, or maybe shame? Until the day she helped clean out Nanny Alice’s house, she didn’t know the family had one.

In 2007 sixteen-year-old Callie discovers Alice’s memoir. Struggling with her own problems, Callie probes into her great-grandmother’s life as a means of escape, and unearths a secret which rocks the whole family.

In 1932 sixteen-year-old Alice ran away from her dysfunctional home in Auckland. She travelled to Rotorua to build a new life. She encountered challenges and disappointments, yet found acceptance and love. But her past catches up with her and threatens to destroy her happiness.

Alice and Callie pay a price to overcome their challenges and both learn there are some things you have to learn to live with.
