INTRODUCTION Since antiquity, man has used plants to treat common infectious diseases and some of these traditional medicines are still included as part of the habitual treatment of various maladies [1]. Virtually all cultures around the globe have relied historically and continue to rely on medicinal plants for primary health care. There is currently a worldwide upsurge in the use of herbal preparations and the active ingredients isolated from medicinal plants in health care [2].
