The Arab world is facing what is possibly the worst situation in a long time, with bleak forecasts looming in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Yemen, an unnamed Arab official told the editor-in-chief of the London-based daily AL HAYAT on Nov. 16. "No Arab official can deny the Arab world is in the worst situation possible. There are those who believe the worst is yet to come and that when the storm begins to blow, it will threaten the safety and stability of their countries, and even their unity." The situation seems to be increasingly slipping towards the abyss, Ghassan Charbel wrote in the Saudi-owned newspaper. "It is hard for any high-ranking official to publicly acknowledge under his name that the situation is so dramatic. Such declarations can affect his country and that country's relations with the other countries. Hence, a journalist can only transfer the message without citing names," Charbel said in his page-one editorial.
