Architectural Ornament

A brief cultural and artistic history of the place of ornament in Western architecture from Antiquity through the 20th century. How industrialization, the rise of a mass market for the arts, and a definition of artistic originality that is unique in art history, led to the increasing abstraction and eventual banishment of (traditional) forms of ornament, and their gradual return.
