Alfred Edward Woodley Mason was an English author and politician, famous mostly for his novel The Four Feathers (1902), adapted for several films.

First published in 1910, Mason's detective novel At the Villa Rose tells the story of a young charming English girl Celia Harland, being almost adopted by a rich widow Madame Dauvray, when the widow is found dead. The girl turns out to be the first suspect, but who is the real murderer?
