1970s. When a gifted scholarship girl called Audrey Mackenzie joins Gertrude Bell College for Girls, Claire Greenwood, and her friend Joanna, find their worlds permanently altered in different ways.
When Audrey attracts the attentions of the notorious head girl of the year above, Catriona Silver, Joanna grows bitterly jealous, especially when she also goes on to attract the attentions of the arrogant childhood friend of Claire's brother, Roger.
Claire becomes increasingly infatuated with Audrey when they enter sixth form, especially as her parent’s marriage grows increasingly taut. When she notices a certain chemistry between Audrey and Roger, a boy she’s despised since childhood, she does everything in her power to turn her against him, especially when he begins to fall in love with Audrey.
However, when tragedy strikes Joanna and her family in a huge way, Claire and her friend’s find their world prematurely torn apart as their school years draw to a close.
