Avalon Blue, past sixty, hides the secret spiritual initiations that have held her hostage, forcing her to remain a loner traveling the world in eccentric clothes of her own design. She would much rather be with others, but is forced into isolation and loneliness until she travels to Winter's Lee, a small northern fishing village. It is here that she meets Lucian and Melanie, who are cousins and best friends. They are Travelers who have settled back into Winter's Lee, expecting to be bored and lonely through old age.

However, everything changes when Avalon unexpectedly arrives in Winter's Lee and flings herself into their arms like a muddy, squalling little messenger, bringing with her an emotional, imaginative journey involving Shamans, animal totems, tattoos, and a mysterious island, disrupting their sedate lives.
