«William Wells Brown (1814 – 1884) was a prominent African-American author, playwright and lecturer who is considered one of the first significant antislavery activists. An escaped slave, he dedicated his life to writing a truthful memoirs, essays, novels, biographies and finally became the most widely published and influential slave narratives.

The biographical essay “Benjamin Banneker” is included in “The Black Man, His Antecedents, His Genius, and His Achievements” volume – a collection of historical sketches briefly depicting the life paths of several great black men.
