Blindfolded

“They must be twins,” a woman says as Henry Wilton and his newly arrived cousin step off the ferry. Henry doesn’t laugh: their resemblance, he realizes, may have made them targets.

At dusk in San Francisco, the narrator has come west to take a job offered by Henry, his boyhood friend and near-double. But a snake-eyed stranger is watching them, and Henry admits the work is dangerous, secret, and “outside the law”—without saying what it is. He leads his cousin through back passages to a gloomy room, listening at every door, while the newcomer tries to decide whether he has walked into an adventure or a trap. Henry says the danger belongs to someone else. How long before it belongs to them both?
