This book is a collation of stories written by Patricia McCormack over a period of 20 years.

It starts in the small village of Abbeyleix in Ireland, with stories from her parents and grandparents.

It touches on the intersection between her family and the large world issues of the last couple of centuries (the two world wars, the Irish famine, the troubles in Ireland, and also life as a protestant in Ireland in 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s etc). It talks about adoption and the obstacles that women have to overcome to live the life they long to lead.
