Castle Rackrent

Thady Quirk has served the Rackrents so long that he calls himself “Honest Thady”—though even his prosperous son looks down on him. Now he means to tell the family’s story, and insists his loyalty is beyond question.

In Ireland, Castle Rackrent stands for an ancient family and a grand way of life, where open-house hospitality can fill even the chicken-house with guests. Thady, the family steward, recounts the Rackrent heirs’ fortunes with a devoted eye and a wonderfully slippery sense of what counts as honour: behind the feasts and fine names lie debts, lawsuits, and tenants caught in the reckoning. As each heir takes his turn with the estate, can Honest Thady’s version be trusted—or will the family’s own story give them away?
