Charlotte Brontë: 1816–1916

Noted Brontë scholar Clement K. Shorter once observed that while the story of the three Brontë sisters attracted much attention, Charlotte Brontë was "naturally in the centre of the picture" because her books had been such great successes. Indeed, not only was her classic 1847 novel Jane Eyre the Victorian-era equivalent of a chart-topping bestseller, but her subsequent novels were also favorably received. Published by the Brontë Society shortly after the centenary of her birth, this 1918 volume features a selection of illuminating essays on the life and works of the eldest surviving Brontë sister, including "Charlotte Brontë as a Romantic" by the prominent English writer G. K. Chesterton and "A Word on Charlotte Brontë" by the critic and poet Sir Edmund Gosse.
