The Structure of a Black Man Built Through an Odyssey in America is about Brown’s personal journey through life in America as an African American male. It talks about the common adversity and barriers that all Black males face and how one has to have a strong foundation to make it through the adversity successfully. It talks about the importance of a strong religious commitment and need for Black men to break pattern of not seeking help when navigating through life's struggles.
Brown’s story illustrates that high levels of success can be obtained by anyone if you have a good foundation. Your final destination is not determined by where you start.
The story is relevant in that my situation is a common one and many who started in a similar poor and humble place in life have failed and fallen to the adversity present in America. However, there is a roadmap for success no matter where you start off. It most importantly gives non-African Americans a close up view on how different life in America is for African Americans. I outline some of the everyday challenges that we face and others take for granted. It allows others to step out of their homogenous spaces for a short period and gain a better understanding.
