Barnaby the Quick's long-desired return to his home, Corenthal, is hampered by peril from all sides. His caravan, crossing the desert toward the harbor city, is ill-fated. Sneaking inside Corenthal, he soon discovers red-robed priests, from a haunted necropolis far south, have brought gloom to the city and despair to its governor.

Barnaby sets a course of haphazard attacks on the priests' policies, attempting to lift the fugue. Aided by his few allies, the distractions fail as often as they succeed. Blackening any small victories, is the anticipated arrival of Ankhar the sorcerer, perhaps weakened by the efforts from their previous mission, but bent on revenge against Elbeth, the unwizard.

Ankhar seeks control of Corenthal, making it a center of his empire, one devoted to worshipping his evil beliefs, and crushing the threat of intellectual enlightenment.

What will tip the balance in Corenthal's favor this time, in a battle not fought by armies, but by necromancy versus reason?
