Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves was born a slave, and after an altercation with his "owner" over a card game in Paris, Texas, he lit out for the Indian Territory in what is today Oklahoma. After the Emancipation Proclamation became the law of the land, he moved to Arkansas, and his skill and accuracy with firearms eventually earned his job as one of 200 new deputy marshals whose job it was to patrol over 800 miles of territory and attempt to bring peace to the West.
