Beschreibung des Verlags

Today, the cello is primarily recognized as a classical instrument, but historically, from the late 17th to early 19th centuries, it had a vibrant role in folk ensembles. In these settings, it provided driving low rhythms for dances and performed expressive Scottish airs.

Over the last forty years, a dedicated movement within the folk music revival has aimed to reintroduce the cello's rich, unique sound to traditional music. Abby Newton has been a key figure at the forefront of this effort, becoming deeply involved with Scottish music and performing frequently in Scotland.

The airs, planxties, and reels in her book draw from a variety of traditional and contemporary sources, including music by the 18th-century fiddler Niel Gow, harper Turlough O'Carolan, Dáithí Sproule, David Hornung, Alasdair Fraser, Ronnie Aimes, and others. All 19 tunes are arranged for solo cello, with most including chord symbols for an accompanying instrument. The book also features Abby Newton's insightful notes on the origin of each tune.
