Cub and Bear

When a small cub sets off to find juicy red berries, he discovers that courage grows slowly in this beautifully illustrated tale of trying, failing, and trying again.

High in the trees, bright red berries glimmer just out of reach. A small cub and his papa set out to find some for themselves, but the forest has other plans. Birds swoop in. A squirrel snatches the prize. Each time, cub hesitates—small, slow, and uncertain. When they finally find a tree bursting with fruit, its slender trunk cannot hold Papa. Papa can cross the river and stand tall, but he’s too big to climb the tree. This time, the cub must try on his own.

In striking black-and-white illustrations punctuated by vivid red, this wordless picture book crafts a cinematic, emotionally resonant journey of setbacks, persistence, and growth, building to a triumphant moment when the cub’s tiny grrrr becomes a roar.
