It is 1983, and Maxwell has been carrying an artefact - a mysterious shard of wood - that attracts wandering souls for seven years. His journey has taken him down highways across North America as he scraped a living together playing guitar in studio sessions. If he stays somewhere too long, the horde of souls who pursue him will catch up, and new spirits gather. To make matters worse, the covens who know of his situation are beginning to disband, while the people who want the shard for their own dark purposes grow.

After all this time, Max has decided there must be a way to use the shard to help people. This book tells the story of the attempt, the people who want to prevent him from discovering more about the artefact’s potential and his descent into darkness.
