Jack used to be a corporate assassin. Most people would consider her next job a lot more cushy: looking after a naive, self-important Lady of Virtue who could snap her fingers and get every little thing she wanted. Jack hates it, and not just because they're sailing along through space in the most run-down ship she's ever seen in her life. Good thing there are amusements along the way, like Julian, the recent academy graduate who has no idea how to take her sense of humor. That whole group of people out for her blood is a little more of an unpleasant distraction than an amusement. It was an accident, geez! Mixing in a sentient ship with the ability to sigh might just be more of a can of worms than an amusement.
